LONDON: SUMMER CAPITAL OF ART

The London arts scene is second to none. It covers fine art, contemporary art, sculpture, photography, crafts, performance art, museum shows and more. Below are some of the events that will take place during London International Fine Art Fair.

 

7-13 June 2010
For the second year, The London International Fine Art & Antique Fair has partnered with Bond Street, London's famous luxury shopping destination and their exciting Culture & Heritage Week.

The week aims to bring together fashion, jewellery, art and antiques, demonstrating Bond Street’s unique heritage. Visitors will have the opportunity to view exceptional vintage collections and in-store craftsmanship demonstrations as well as attend private views, heritage tours, lectures and exclusive parties in many of the stores on Bond Street.

Courtesy cars will be on hand to whisk you between Bond Street and the Fair.

 

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS


Picturing Britain exhibition features over 80 works by the artist regarded as the ‘father of English watercolour’, Paul Sandby RA (1731-1809).

The Summer Exhibition opens on 14 June. It is the world’s largest open-submission contemporary art exhibition. Held every year without interruption since 1769, the Summer Exhibition attracts around 10,000 works from established and emerging artists.

 

VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM


Grace Kelly: Style Icon is featuring 35 haute couture gowns by her favourite couturiers Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Yves St Laurent.

Modern Masters: Matisse, Picasso, Dali and Warhol is showing over 50 prints drawn from the V&A Museum's collections selected to illustrate these modern masters' engagement with the printed medium.

 

BRITISH MUSEUM


Kingdom of IFE exhibition presents exquisite examples of brass, copper, stone and terracotta sculpture from West Africa.

Fra Angelico to Leonardo exhibition features 100 exquisite drawings by Italian Renaissance artists including Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Verrocchio.

 

TATE


Tate Britain is running an exhibition on Henry Moore, one of Britain’s greatest artists. This stunning exhibition takes a fresh look at his work and legacy, presenting over 150 stone sculptures, wood carvings, bronzes and drawings.

 

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY


The Indian Portrait 1560-1860 looks at the Indian portrait over three centuries, featuring 60 works from public and private collections. It includes portraits of Mughal emperors, courtiers and holy men, and depictions of Europeans by Indian artists.

 

THE QUEEN’S GALLERY, BUCKINGHAM PALACE


Victoria & Albert: Art & Love is the first exhibition to focus on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's shared love of art. Featuring more than 400 items from the Royal Collection, the display spans the Royal couple's life together, from their engagement in 1839, to the Prince's death in 1861.

 

OTHER EVENTS

Trooping the Colour, 12 June, Horse Guards Parade London celebrates The Queen's official birthday in June each year with Trooping the Colour, a fantastic military parade that has taken place in London since 1820.

MINT Polo in the Park, 4-6 June, Hurlingham Park With eight global teams confirmed including London, New York, Buenos Aires and Geneva, MINT Polo in the Park brings the cream of the world’s professional polo talent to London. Polo will take centre stage but the event will also include jousting, military displays, a luxury village, Veuve Clicquot Champagne Garden, Argentine Asados (BBQs) and more.
