PANEL DISCUSSION: Young Masters Revisited – is this a new development in contemporary art?
Panel Discussion which will take place in the Pillar Hall off the Main Entrance on Saturday 5th June, 2.30pm. The panel discussion will explore why currently there is a trend amongst contemporary artists to look back at Art History and the artistic practice of the Old Masters. This renewed focus on technical skill, historical ideas and formal presentation raises some interesting questions including, whether increasingly “craft” has a new role to play in contemporary artistic practice. The artists present include the winner and finalists of The Young Masters Art Prize, 2009 sponsored by AXA UK and founded by Gallerist Cynthia Corbett to “celebrate the technical skill in homage to the Old Masters, which has often been ignored when bestowing recognition and awards to young artists”.

The panel will be chaired by Old Master Dealer Roy Bolton, Director of Sphinx Fine Art, panel includes Hector de Gregorio Artist, winner The Young Masters Art Prize, Cynthia Corbett, Director The Cynthia Corbett Gallery and Averill Ogden, Outset Contemporary Art Fund.

Modern British Masters: Pictures from the Bryan Ferry Collection

This exceptional group of fifteen rarely seen paintings is representative of Bryan Ferry’s passion for early twentieth-century British painting which he has been collecting for thirty years. Selected by Richard Shone, Editor of The Burlington Magazine and the author of many publications on modern British art, this exhibition not only offers a fascinating insight into the taste and interests of the former lead singer of Roxy Music and internationally-known performer but is also a great opportunity to view works by some of Britain’s finest artists.

The paintings range in date from c.1900, including a superb work by William Orpen and a brooding portrait of the young Wyndham Lewis by Augustus John, to a little-known late painting by Walter Sickert from the 1930s. In between are Post-Impressionist works by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell.
